What to Know Before Starting to Cloth Diaper

You guys have had a ton of questions ever since I first shared that we were going to be cloth diapering Stella. We are now over a year into cloth diapering, and I wanted to share with you guys some of the info I have learned. I hope this can help you feel confident starting your own cloth diaper journey!

It’s not that scary

Cloth diapering may seem crazy overwhelming, and like it comes with a whole lot of extra work. But in reality, they aren’t much different than disposable diapers. After you use the diaper, instead of throwing the diaper away, you simply throw it in the wash to use again!

Different types of diapers

There are different types of cloth diapers to fit your individual needs. I personally love pocket style diapers, but I recommend looking into the different styles and figure out what you think will work best for you.

Care for your diapers

How you care for your diapers will determine your success with clothe diapering. There are a few things to learn and rules to follow to make sure your diapers last.

First you will need to develop a wash routine for your diapers. A good wash routine will have a prewash and a mainwash cycle, as well as adequate amounts of an appropriate laundry detergent. Wash routines vary by your washing machine, I recommend checking out Fluff Love University for help planning.

You will also want to make sure you use a cloth safe diaper cream if you plan to use one. Certain diaper creams can cause your diapers to repel liquid rather than absorb them, so making sure you use the right cream is super important.

Know your poop

Yes, when you cloth diaper, you need to know your poop :p This will affect how you clean your diapers.

Cloth diapering saves money

One of the main reasons to love cloth diapering is how much money it can save you! It requires a bit of an investment up front, but once you have your stash of diapers built up, you are good to go! A single set of diapers can last you from infancy through potty training, and can even be used through multiple kids!

I hope this was helpful and gave you a peak into what you need to know to start cloth diapering. I am super passionate about it, and recommend it to anyone who will listen. There are just so many benefits to cloth diapers, least of all how stinkin’ cute they look on baby’s booty!
