Hey everyone! I have a super special post to share with you all today. I filmed my very first couple of vlogs while Melissa and I were on our vacation in Mexico, and the first one just went live on my YouTube channel today! We had such an amazing time in Mexico, and I’m so excited to share it with you.
It is also super fun for the memory keeper in me to have these vlogs already edited and ready to share and relive. I don’t think I have ever sorted through or printed out (and definitely haven’t scrapbooked) any pictures form previous vacations as fast as I did with these videos. So I’m super excited to already have a finished memory project from this trip, so Melissa and I can also look back on it for years to come!

This trip was particularly special for us, because not only were we celebrating my amazing fiancee’s recent graduation, but it was also our very first real grown-up vacation together. We had never flown together prior to this trip, and most of our previous vacations had been to visit family and smaller trips like that. This was our first full fledged, on our own, vacation. And we had an absolute blast!
April 30, 2016
The first day was a travel day, and we were super lucky to have everything go extremely smoothly. The one hiccup we faced was trying to check-in at the domestic check-in rather than the international… oops! We were starting to get a little freaked when the computer repeatedly told us it couldn’t locate our tickets, when we finally realized our goof!
After that everything was smooth sailing. We sped through security, and arrived at our gate 2 whole hours before our flight. We had time to get some coffee, relax, do a tiny bit of shopping and get excited about our trip!
Being in the 19th & 20th boarding positions to get on the plane, we basically had our pick of seats. We ended up in the emergency exit row (extra legroom!) and since our flight was super empty, we got the entire row of 3 seats to ourselves! We spent the flight hanging out, enjoying the view out of the plane window and watching In the Heart of the Sea.
Once landed, we picked up our checked luggage and sailed through customs, wondering how the heck we got so lucky with basically zero lines this entire trip. We had decided to rent a car for the week, and our rental agency picked us up right from the airport to bring us to their office. Cue dorky first shots of each other in Mexico!
After picking up the car, Melissa drove us to our resort. She was a little nervous about driving in Mexico for the first time (we were warned about getting pulled over by the police down there) but she did fine, and we got to the resort with no issues!
The resort we stayed at was the Grand Riviera Princess, and holy guacamole was this place amazing. It was a little funny driving into it though. After turning off the main highway, it was basically two miles of alley-like road with huge concrete walls on either side. It was a little disconcerting to be honest. But once we finally arrived at the entrance of the resort, we were blown away.
There were palm trees everywhere, and it looked exactly how you’d expect a tropical Mexican resort to look. And this place was huge. I still can’t even wrap my head around how big it actually was. I believe we spent most of our entire stay on one half of the resort, so we didn’t even really see the whole thing!
But the entire resort was gorgeous. We booked a room that was in their “platinum package” which included all sorts of extra amenities like free room service, free drinks, exclusive pool and beach areas and all sorts of extra goodies. And let me tell you upgrading to that package was so worth it! We were so spoiled that entire week, it was amazing.
So after checking in, and getting a welcome-to-Mexico glass of champagne, we went up to check out our room. You guys, our room was so incredible. When initially booking, we almost went for a different layout, but I am so glad we changed our minds and booked this room. It was so beautiful, and we absolutely loved it.
We were also literally the closest building to the beach, so it was like a 2 minute walk from our room which was awesome. This resort was big enough that they had a little golf-cart train type thing that constantly ran from the front of the resort to the back where the beach was. So it definitely could have been a huge hike to get to the beach if we stayed in one of the other buildings.
We had a stunning private balcony with a beautiful view of palm trees… and a whirpool tub! I thought that was the funniest thing! Unfortunately I never got to test out this balcony tub, but I think it would have been so fun.
The rest of the room was super spacious, and decorated just lovely. I really loved the room.
We had a nice little living room area.
As well as the main bedroom area with a king bed. We were really happy to have a king bed, because while you could request a king, you weren’t guaranteed one, and we could have ended up with two doubles. Which wouldn’t have been the end of the world, but we were happy to get the king that we wanted. I also think that huge headboard is super cool.
The bathroom was also huge and gorgeous. And had a funny sliding window opening up over the gigantic tub into the rest of the room! We definitely got a kick out of that. We also enjoyed the luxury of double sinks since we don’t have that in our apartment. But it did take us a night or two to actually realize that meant we could get ready for bed at the same time!
The water closet and walk-in shower were really cool, and were just partitioned off with frosted glass doors, and a wall separating the two. Again I just love the style of this room. If you want a full tour, I did do a walk-through of the whole room in the video.
And here is what the view from the front of our hotel room looked like. The building we were in was a large square, with a beautiful little pond/fountain thing in the middle.
After we got settled into our room, we headed out to kind of just walk around and explore the resort a little. We went back up to the main lobby to get some pesos, and wander in a couple of the shops they had up their. Everything was just so beautiful, we could not get over our surroundings. It was so amazing.
After we explored a bit, we went down to the beach for the first time. Like everything else, it was so beautiful! Again with our platinum room, we had a private area of the beach, which was practically empty our entire stay, so we pretty much got the beach to ourselves! The water was so beautiful, and so warm. Everything was just amazing.
After hanging out on the beach for a bit, we finally went up to the main buffet for dinner because we were starving! We ended the night finishing the movie we were watching on the plane, and crashed after a long, full day arriving in Mexico!

On day two, our first full day in Mexico, we decided to start things off with a super relaxed day. We started with breakfast next to a beautiful view of the pool, and then booked massages for the evening. We spent the time in between relaxing on the beach, and it was glorious.
Again we pretty much had the entire beach to ourselves. We were the only ones in the water, and it literally felt like we were on our own private island.
I mean, seriously, how beautiful are these views?
I just couldn’t get over how lucky we were.
We also found a bunch of friends around the resort throughout our stay. From kittens to coati to pelicans to iguanas, we saw it all! We especially fell in love with this little family of kittens who had made a home right near our room.
I also got a total kick out of these guys, which are called Coati. They were everywhere around the resort, and usually came out late afternoon to early evening. I thought they were so cool with their stripy tails and little raccoon faces.
After our massages in the evening (my first ever, and wow was it so relaxing!) we got ready and went to dinner at the resort’s steakhouse. Afterwards we decided to just wander around, and we enjoyed the empty resort all lit up at night.
We also stumbled across some live music at an outdoor bar, and so we stopped to get a drink and enjoy the scene.
Overall it was a great first two days in Mexico, and we had an absolutely amazing time. We kept saying that we couldn’t believe how beautiful it was, how lucky we were and what a wonderful time we were having.
I have two more vlogs edited and ready to go up Wednesday and Friday, so be sure to come back to see the rest of our trip! I hope you guys enjoyed getting a little peak into our daily activities in Mexico 🙂
