Hi guys! I have a post to share with you guys today that is long overdue! I haven’t shared anything apartment related since my desk tour way back in October! So many things have changed around here, and I am super excited to get you guys all caught up with our little apartment journey 🙂
I totally didn’t mean to wait this long to share, life just kind of happened. Either the updates we were doing were too small to warrant a real post, or I fell into the trap of waiting for a room update to be ‘done’ to share (which the way I do things could mean months… or let’s be honest… years lol).
Anyways, I really wanted to at least get a full apartment tour out to you guys, since it was recently our two year anniversary of moving into this apartment! I shared a one year tour with you guys last year, and really wanted to share all the progress and updates that have happened during year two. So without any further ado, welcome to my home!
When you come in our front door, you walk right into this short little hallway that leads to the entryway. This is where we take off our shoes, and have a couple hooks to hang current coats or purses and Dakota’s leash. Since I last shared, we switched out the rug in this little hallway to one that fits the space much better. I also love the pop of color and fun this rug adds to the space!
The hallway opens up into our little entryway landing, which overlooks the first floor, and has a split staircase leading to both the first and second floors. You’ll find a better picture to show this a bit later on in the post.
We are super lucky to have this pretty large entry area. In addition to what we store in the entry hallway, we also have a coat closet and enough room for a cute little bench and table. Each member of our little family (Melissa, Dakota and I) have our own bin in the bench to coral items we may need to access before running out the door.
Next to the bench we have a little side table Melissa and I painted a while back. On here we keep a bowl for Melissa’s wallet and such, a few pairs of our sunglasses, and any mail that we need to sort through. I do love the amount of color in this little area, but I would like to update a few of these elements.
I really want to replace the bench pillows, as those have been around since I got my very first apartment, and are totally showing their age. I also want to find something to hang on the wall around the mirror, so it doesn’t look so random and lonely hanging there all by itself.
Turning with your back to the bench, you’ll be facing our little staircase. I just love having a multi-level apartment, and the idea of having stairs were one of the reasons I fell so in love with this place! This seems silly until you’ve lived in a single floor for 5 years, then stairs start to become real exciting lol!
The railing to the left also overlooks the entire first floor, and I just love how open the whole place feels with this view. We got especially lucky with this, as we have super tall ceilings since we are on the top floor of our building. This makes the space especially large and open feeling.
Here’s another view of the whole living room, looking down from the entryway.
At the foot of the stairs we have our cute little bar cart that I am so in love with!
Ok so swinging around we are looking right into our living room (you can see the entryway bench and table on the left… to help get your bearings). The last update I shared with you guys was when we added in the tall glass shelves on the right on the TV stand, and did a minor rearrange of that setup.
Not much has changed in here, but we are slowly working on decluttering and organizing the TV stand. It’s been a slow process, but we’ve at least managed to sort out a bunch of the junk that was just needlessly being stored there.
I am hoping to eventually add another set of glass shelves to the left side of the TV stand, replacing the cheap Target bookcase we currently have there. The bookcase is really old at this point, and the shelves are warping and it’s just getting to be that time that it needs to be replaced.
We’ve also added a bit more decoration to the sofa table, and I really like how it’s coming along. It’s still pretty simple and minimalistic, but doesn’t look quit as sparse. Basically we just have a bunch of random candles and glass jars and such. We’re also working on filling the two larger glass jars on the ends with our wine and champagne corks, which I think will look really cool once we get a good collection going.
Turning around again, this is how the other side of our living room is looking. Still loving our new couch, and still consider it one of the best improvements we’ve made to our apartment! I do hope to update our coffee table soon, we just have a little Ikea Lack table as a stand in until we can find a nicer one to replace it with.
Behind the couch we still have our little wooden desk. We honestly don’t use it very often, and actually have a tentative plan to put something else in it’s place, which I’ll go into a bit further on in the post.
You might also recognize the bubble gum pink dresser that used to be up in our bedroom! There was a lot of rearranging and updating that has happened in there, and so we ended up with the dresser down here. We *still* have plans to repaint it (it was originally painted for my high school bedroom decor… you could say I’ve procrastinated updating it) and will hopefully get to that project this spring/summer!
Ok, next up we have a super major change. We are currently in the middle of turning our dining room into Melissa’s office! If you’ve been following me for a while, you know Melissa and I used to share the second bedroom in our apartment as a joint office. Well we decided to give that whole room to me (yay!) and convert our dining room into Melissa’s own office!
Currently, the room is an awkward mixture of both dining room and home office. But things are still in the works, and we are hoping to get the huge dining room table out of there pretty soon. We are planning to downsize our dining table to a little two person (possibly with the ability to expand when needed) dining table.
The plan as of now is to replace the little desk in the living room with our new smaller dining table, to give Melissa a true office without having to also share it with our dining room. This project is pretty high on our list, so I’ll definitely keep you guys updated as things move along!
For now, the room is pretty much split 50/50. The side closer to the living room is our current dining room space, with the china cabinet sort of in the doorway between the two rooms, and the dining table pushed up against the wall. It’s not the most attractive setup, but it’s been perfectly fine as a temporary solution.
The other side of the room is all Melissa’s office stuff that we just moved down from upstairs. Again the furniture setup is a little awkward, but we’ll be able to get a better layout once the dining table is out of the way and we have the entire room to work with.
We are also planning on getting her some additional storage once we have the space, so she doesn’t have to cram all of her stuff into a tiny Expedit and bookcase.
Here’s how that room looks from the kitchen
And turning around looking into the kitchen from the dining room/office.
Moving into the kitchen, not much has changed since I last shared, except the counters have gotten a serious decluttering.
I would still love to somehow spruce up our little ‘laundry room’ and add some compact but functional storage or something over there. Still haven’t worked out exactly what I’d like to do, but that’s in the back of my mind.
Other than that I’m pretty happy with how the kitchen is going. It feels nice and simple and clear to me. As you guys know I would 100% prefer white cabinets and a nicer counter top, but what can you do when you’re a renter? They’re not horribly offensive anyways, so they really don’t bother me all that much.
One update we did make in this room is a serious declutter and reorganization of our little makeshift pantry in the opposite corner of the room. Since we moved in this was one of the most unsightly and unorganized areas of our home. There was so. much. clutter. And we had never bothered to setup any sort of attempt at an organization system of any kind previously.
So I am just thrilled with how much better this corner currently is. I still don’t think it’s perfect, and would love to buy some more pretty containers and bins and such. But it is sooo much better, and I’m happy with how much more functional and organized it is now!
Ok and so that finishes up our first floor! Now up to the second floor :). This is what our upstairs hallway looks like, with our bedroom to the left, my office straight ahead and the bathroom to the right.
Let’s start in the bedroom! This room has also gone through a bunch of changes since I last shared with you. The last thing you saw was when I hung up a pretty shower curtain as our window curtains, which actually worked very nicely for a while. But since then we have again changed those our for real curtains, and I really love how the new ones look!
The bed and bedside tables are pretty much the same. Although we have plans to replace almost everything you see here. We are hoping to replace our bed frame, bed linens and bedside tables in the near future, and I am so excited! I already have the new bed frame picked out for whenever we are ready to tackle that overhaul, and I cannot wait to share my vision for this space with you guys!
As I’ve also talked about before, I really would like to add a bench to the end of the bed eventually. The bench would replace the ottoman (which Dakota uses to get up onto the bed). We would just need to find a new place for Dakota’s bed and crate, which wouldn’t be too hard.
I just love the look of benches at the foot of beds, I just cannot decide on what style I want! I also want to wait until we have our new bed frame before thinking too hard about it, since clearly the style of the bed will impact what style of bench would look good.
And because I’m a shameless pommy mommy, here’s a little Dakota cameo!
She’s such a little cutie patootie <3
Ok back to room pictures :). Here’s a better look at my side of the bed. Like I said above, I really would like to replace our bedside tables. We have some more little Ikea Lack tables as stand ins currently. They are obviously way to small, but they’ve gotten the job done. Again I want to wait until we have our new bed to replace the nightstands, since the height of the bed will affect what tables we want.
Turning back around to the other side of the room, you will see the most dramatic change that’s happened in here. Previously this corner held both my dresser (that you saw is now down on the first floor) and my vanity. With the new arrangement, Melissa’s dresser is in the space where my dresser used to be.
In my vanity’s old spot, I now have my new dresser that I super love! I have wanted to get this dresser (Ikea Hemnes) for quit a while, and I am so in love. It offers so much more space than my old dresser, which also helped me clear out some more room in my closet!
Speaking of my closet, I believe this is the first time I’ll be sharing it here on the blog! Melissa and I recently did a super crazy huge purge of clothes, and cleared it out enough to make it halfway decent to post on the internet lol!
The left side of the closet is my side. On the closet floor I have a couple of shoe organizers, that for the first time in like ever I can fit my entire shoe collection in! Yay for decluttering!
Hung on the hangers, I store my nicer/dressier shirts, and all my skirts and dresses. The shelves hold a bunch of seasonal or less accessed clothing, all my purses/bags and some other random stuff.
We have three hanging organizers in the back of the closet, on is mine and two are Melissa’s. I keep all of my pants and shorts in my hanging organizer.
The right side of the closet is Melissa’s, which I’m not going to go too much into detail going through.
I still definitely think our closet need some major attention to get it to be where I would like, but compared to where we were before, I am just thrilled with how nicely it is coming along! Eventually I would like to get rid of the hanging organizers in the back and replace it with something a little nicer looking.
I also hope to get some matching bins or something for the shelves to make things look more uniform and less cluttered. I also need a better system for organizing my purses. We’ll see where things end up, but for now I’m happy!
Next up is our bathroom! Up until now we’ve had sort of a black and white ‘theme’ going on in our bathroom, but recently I’ve wanted to soften and lighten things up in here.
With that in mind, when we took down the shower curtain that was previously our bedroom window curtain, I decided to actually use it as a shower curtain in our bathroom! I still love the pattern, and the grey really softens up the space compared to our previous graphic black and white curtain.
I’m also hoping to replace all our bathroom towels with white towels. I always love the look of all white bathroom towels, it just feels so spa like to me! I’m also on the hunt for a new bath mat, maybe with a fun pop of color!
The only other real update that’s happened in here is the addition of the shelf hung over the toilet. This is our unofficial bath shelf, and holds all our bath products like bath bombs, bath salts, candles and any masks or lotions I like to use when I take a bath.
Finally, the last room in the house is my favorite room! Like I said earlier, I now have the upstairs office all to my very self, and I LOVE it! Just like Melissa’s office, things aren’t fully set up in here yet, but I’m so excited to show you what I have so far!
My vanity now sits where Melissa’s desk used to be. This is the area that clearly needs the most attention in the room. I still need to hang my large mirror over my vanity, and I hope to actually frame out the mirror this time, which I think will look so nice! I also hope to eventually get two 9-drawer Alex units to sit on either side of my vanity, giving my tons more storage.
As you can see I currently still do ‘share’ my office with my little munchkin. As things get more setup around here, I will definitely be working a little corner for Dakota into the plan. Right now her bed, upstairs toy bin and water bowl are just kind of sitting around my vanity.
The corner under my window is not my favorite. It currently holds my tripod and studio light, which I would love to find a better way to store. They are just so big. For now they just sit in the corner so I can pull them out when I need them, but I’d love to find a better solution.
I’m also planning on emptying and getting rid of the big set of unsightly plastic drawers. They used to be in my closet, but I moved them in here a bit ago when I no longer needed them in the closet. But I really don’t like having them in here, so they will be getting a new home once I can find new storage for the books and such its currently holding.
Continuing around the room we have my desk where it has always been. This is truly my happy space, and I just love that I get to come in here to work everyday! The Expedit shelves are currently undergoing a reevaluation.
Since I can now spread out over the whole office, all my systems and setups are getting updates and tweaked. So some of the things I’ve been storing in my desk shelves may get moved into the office closet. Which now looks like this:
We took the doors off the closets!! I cannot stress how much more open it made the room feel! I mean seriously it added so much more visual space, instead of simply keeping the folding doors open all the time. I can also access the stuff in the edges of the closet a lot easier now without the doors in the way.
Since this is an apartment, and we will have to put the doors back up when we move out, we simply stored them under our bed. Totally out of sight and out of mind!
I do have lots of plans to clean up and organize the office closet more now that it is super open to the room. The entire office is actually going to be majorly overhauled some time soon, so expect a post on that! I can’t wait to get it all setup into my perfect dream room!
And that wraps up my home tour! I can’t believe how different things look since last year! And we still have so many projects in the works! I’m going to try and not let things get so long between apartment updates for you guys from now on.
Let me know if there are any specific apartment related posts you would like to see, and I can get to work on sharing them with you! I was also hoping to get an apartment tour video filmed for you guys for this post, but in the interest of time I decided against it for now. But let me know if that’s something you want to see in the future and I can work on putting something together!
If you’ve made it this far and have actually read this insanely long post, you have all my love! If you want to see more apartment tour posts, to checkout how things have changed and how far we’ve come, head over to these posts:
