Hey guy! I have my very first wedding update for you today, and I am so excited to start sharing my wedding planning process with you! Melissa & I went to our first wedding expo over the weekend, and so I thought this would be the perfect time to share some of our thoughts and plans that have been forming for our wedding so far!
While no official plans have been made, or vendors booked, Melissa and I have been chit chatting since we got engaged about things we would and wouldn’t like. So we have begun to form a vague idea about what we want for our wedding. We also have a few more specific plans laid out, that are just waiting on final confirmation.

Wedding Expo Experience
The wedding expo was definitely an awesome experience, if not a completely overwhelming one! As soon as we walked in we were just taken aback by the enormity. There were a ton of vendors present, and we didn’t even know where to start!
I definitely really liked going to this expo as one of the first real things we have done for wedding planning, because it gave me so much information and a great jumping off place to start the rest of my planning.
Like I said, there were a ton of vendors, which was really nice to check out and compare a bunch at once. For example, at a glance we could see if a wedding photographer’s style matched our own, or if our personalities meshed well with the vendor’s. A few of the vendors were pretty pushy, and would try and pull you in to their booths and talk your ear off about their services, but most were very nice and helpful and answered any questions you had.
There were also a lot of samples (mostly food) and free gifts and a TON of pamphlets/business cards. We ended up getting a tote bag that was being passed out by one of the vendors to carry around all our loot haha! The one free gift I’m most excited about (which you received with purchase of your expo ticket) is a free year long subscription to Brides magazine!
Overall it was a great experience, we left with a lot of information and leads on vendors we were interested in working with. It was also a great way to kick of the wedding planning, and Melissa and I had a wonderful time experiencing it all with both of our mothers and Melissa’s grandmother!
Wedding Thoughts & Plans
Like I mentioned, we haven’t make any concrete plans for the wedding yet, but we have been chatting about a few ideas and getting a feel for what we want for our wedding. We have started a Pinterest board that I have been pinning to like a mad woman with ideas and inspiration, which has been super fun and helpful!
Below I shared a few different topics we’ve been discussing, and talked about any decisions we’ve made or preferences we have.
We both agreed almost immediately that we want a wedding around Springtime. And again, we both agreed that pulling off planning an entire wedding in 6 months was just not going to happen. So we are planning to get married Spring of 2017. This way we also get a little longer to enjoy our engagement period, and we have a nice long time to plan and prepare for our dream wedding!
We’ve decided we want a venue that will host both the ceremony and the reception. We are also really liking the idea of an outside ceremony, followed by an indoor reception. Melissa has also cast a vote for a venue near some sort of body of water (she grew up sailing), which I also think sounds really nice (and would be so fun for some pictures!).
I have always been a huge lover of mansions and historic buildings, and so I think we’re going to start our search around there. We’ve also tossed around the idea of doing it at a vineyard, or just an actual event venue if it fits all of our criteria.
I love all the reception inspiration images on Pinterest that have huge windows and a ton of natural light, so I would love to find a place that offers that as well.
Wedding Decor & Colors
We decided on some wedding colors very soon after getting engaged, and while nothing is set until we start making purchases, so far they’ve stuck. As of now we’re going with a light mint (more blue than green) with grey and white accents and subtle pops of gold here and there.
I’m also hoping to do a lot of the decorations ourselves, as well as all or most of the stationary. Since I do love crafting, and I have a lot of supplies that would help (like my Silhouette) I’d love to save money wherever we can so we could spend it on say a nicer venue, photographer, etc. I also think it would just be super fun to have such personal touches added into our wedding!
Melissa and I designed an initial mock-up of a cake design we really like, again pretty early on in our engagement. While this probably won’t be the final cake we end up with, it’s just a nice way to see where our tastes lie, and what we do and don’t like in a cake!
So our first design is a mix of two cakes I found on Pinterest. It is all white with drapey white pearl details like this cake, with grey ribbon and big bow like this one. Especially after visiting the expo, I am super in love with white-on-white cake designs. I also think it’d be fun with maybe just a hint of gold edible glitter on there somewhere…
Save the Dates & Stationary
Like I said above, I want to do most of the stationary myself. Since Save the Dates will be first on that list, I have begun designing them so they are ready to go as soon as we book a venue and set a date. I am definitely planning on sharing my final design in either a video or a blog post.
Until then, the basic idea is a doily gate trifold card (all in white) with the doilies tied together with a ribbon (maybe gold) to hold the card closed. Inside there will be a square of tissue paper (probably mint) along will all the information printed on a page glued to the back of the card. I hope that makes sense!
The other thing I have been hard at work getting put together is our wedding site. While it’s not near being finished, the basic structure is all setup, which you can checkout here if you’re interested. I’m planning to keep the main page public, as a place where you can find all the videos, blog posts, pictures etc. that I’m sharing about our wedding.
Then I will also have a password protected sub-page that wedding guests will be able to access (password will be distributed along with the URL on the save the dates/wedding invitations). This page will have all the specific details, instructions and information guests need about the Big Day!
So that pretty much sums up all that we’ve done so far with to plan for our wedding! I am so super excited to have this process really started!
