Hey loves!! If you haven’t already heard (or guessed from the title of this post) I have some super exciting news to share with you today… I got engaged!! Oh my gosh, it has been a little over two weeks now since it happened, and I still can’t quite believe it’s real!
If you follow me on any of my social media accounts (@labelmemerrit) then you probably already saw the announcement when it originally happened. But I wanted to make an ‘official’ post of sorts, plus a video, sharing all the fun details with you guys!
I was so touched my your excitement when I first announced my engagement, so I hope you like this peak into the proposal and how it all happened as well! I will warn you however, this post is very picture heavy and long! I did my best to narrow it down, but well… I sorta failed :p. So I apologize in advance for all the scrolling hehe!
If you’re having trouble viewing the embedded video player, click here to be taken directly to the video on YouTube.
If you prefer reading posts over watching videos, I also included all the info and details below, plus tons of pictures! I also went into a little more detail with the proposals and such if you liked the video but want more!
So starting way back from the beginning! Melissa and I actually went to high school (and part of middle school) together. While we knew of each other, we didn’t really run in the same circles, and so never really hung out.
After we both graduated high school, we crossed paths again at a weekend getaway at a mutual friend’s house on the bay. My sweet brand new puppy (#Dakotapom, who was only a couple months old at the time) quickly got Melissa’s attention, and brought her moms together. Melissa and I began hanging out after that weekend and quickly became best friends. Over the next couple of months our friendship grew into more, and on November 7, 2010 Melissa
awkwardly stuttered asked me to be her girlfriend.
Over time we moved in together/Melissa slept over and never left 😉 and settled into life as a little family of 3 (yes our dog counts as a family member around here). Melissa is my best friend, my partner, and my love, and it quickly became clear we would spend our lives together.
So the night it happened was on our 5 year anniversary, November 7, 2015. Melissa and I have had very open communication about engagement and marriage up until this point, so the proposal wasn’t going to be so much of a surprise. We had picked out our rings together, which I’ll go into a little more later in this post, and had discussed a timeline for engagement we were both comfortable with (with maybe some slight hinting on my part that our anniversary would be a great date).
So while I had a strong suspicion things would be happening on our anniversary, I wasn’t absolutely sure. I also didn’t know anything about what she had planned, or how she would ‘pop the question’. It is actually a small miracle she was able to keep this a secret until it was time, because Melissa is the type of person who begs to give you your Christmas present a week early because she’s so excited and just can’t wait to tell you what she got you.
So the day of our anniversary, Melissa surprised me with an amazing manicure at a salon & spa. This wasn’t your average paint-your-nails-and-be-done manicure, there were scrubs, and masks and massages with this one! So I definitely felt quite pampered heading into that night.
When I got home, Melissa had prepared these super yummy stuffed mushrooms and had a nice bottle of wine waiting for us. She had also set up the dining room table with some pretty votives and tea light candles, and a beautiful bouquet of red roses in my favorite vase.
Our little munchkin even got dressed for the occasion, in a dress I actually made for her myself a couple years ago!
The night was so nice and relaxing, we just drank wine and ate different tasty appetizers throughout the evening and chatted. It was really nice to truly turn off the noise of daily life and focus on enjoying time with each other.
So like I said, Melissa and I had just finished the yummy stuffed mushrooms, and were now just hanging out on our couch chatting. Then we ‘cheers-ed’ to our 5 year anniversary, and Melissa pulled out my present. I unwrapped the package (with Dakota’s help) and inside was a stunning white fountain pen from Cross, with “Will You Marry Me? Love, Melissa” written on the cap <3.
After I had seen the pen, I looked up, and Melissa had the ring box out and open. I (of course) said yes, and squeeled
a bit a bunch, and put on my brand new engagement ring! While we had picked out the ring together, this was the first time I was seeing it all sized correctly and with the diamond we picked out. And oh my gosh it was just stunning! But again, I’ll go more into the rings later in the post.
Melissa’s proposal absolutely blew me away. It is completely better and more perfect than anything I could have imagined for myself. I mean you guys know I’m a planner girl, and a pen addict. What better way to pop the question with a fancy schmancy fountain pen? I’m also a
hoarder ‘collector’ and so I like to keep things, and I am just so in love with the fact that I get to keep my proposal, on this pen, for ever and ever!
After it was all over, Melissa pointed out that she had also been recording the entire proposal! At one point before it all began, she had asked me to refill her wine. So while I was in the kitchen filling up our glasses, she quickly set up our camera and set it to record!
Again, I love that I get to keep this video of her proposal for ever. I also have a horrendously horrible long term memory, so having this video will help keep the details of this special night forever. While I would love to share this footage with you guys, Melissa and I have decided to keep that video private and just something special for us, I hope you understand!
After Melissa finished up her proposal, and I was finally able to tear my eyes away from my new bling, I decided I absolutely could not wait to give Melissa her ring. Originally, I had been planning to set up my proposal for the next time she left the house, but I just couldn’t wait. So I sent Melissa and the dog out for a walk while I ran around the apartment like a crazy lady setting up my proposal.
What I had planned was a scavenger hunt for Melissa through our apartment. Following a series of totally lame and cheasey clues, she would find a couple presents and finally be lead to her engagement ring and my proposal.
1. Given upon return to the apartment
Welcome home, we can finally begin
Let’s get started, let’s dig in
You awesome fiancee has made you a fun game!
I truly hope its not too very lame
If you want your gifts, follow the clues
To get started please take off your shoes
Find each clue and read very closely
You’ll get your first clue where your coat goes mostly
2. In the coat closet
Congratulations, you cracked the first clue!
Now its time to check where you work best
Where we build dreams and hang out too
Why don’t you go find what’s on your desk
3. On her desk with picture frame
With this frame, I promise you love
Your next clue is waiting hidden above
Where we brush teeth with all of our might
Where we get ready, before saying goodnight
4. In bathroom vanity
We will create a life of fun
Our kind of goofy, there is only one
Together we won’t ever be bored
Go look where our dog’s toys are stored
5. In Dakota’s toy bin with BB8
With this droid, I promise you fun
In our life together, the laughs will never be done
I’m just going to say we’ll be bitchin’
Since nothing else seems to rhyme with Kitchen
6. On the kitchen counter
Now one last place you need to tread
My favorite place to lay my head
The place where I turn out the light
Where I will always kiss you goodnight
7. On our bed with the ring
With this ring, I promise forever
I can’t think of anything better
I can’t wait to start our wonderful life
Will you agree to be my wife?
And so there you have my totally cheesey love scavenger hunt proposal! We had a lot of fun running around the apartment together as she figured out her clues and found her presents. The first present was a framed picture I made outlining 10 reasons I love her, and the second was the BB8 droid by Sphero that she has been absolutely dying for.
She loved her presents, and her proposal, and I’m just so happy it went as well as I had planned. Here’s a closer look at the framed picture I made for her. I was thinking about doing a tutorial to share how I made it, and what supplies I use. Would you guys be interested in something like that?
After both proposals were done, we just spent the rest of the night hanging out, being engaged and relaxing. We decided to watch Inside Out that night, and oh my gosh that is such a cute movie! We both may or may not have ended up in tears at the end lol. Over all it was an amazing night, that ended with both of us promising a lifetime of these amazing nights with each other.
Ok so now the good part where I can gush about our new bling! Melissa and I decided we both wanted engagement rings, so we each got to pick out our perfect engagement rings. We also decided we wanted to pick both of them out together, rather than separately and as a surprise.
We had been talking about marriage for a while now, and have known we wanted to get married for a couple years, but were waiting for the right time for us to actually get engaged. A couple years ago Melissa gave me a beautiful promise ring, so for a while now it hasn’t been a question of ‘if’ we will get married, but more ‘when’.
So back this past Valentine’s day, Melissa surprised me with a trip to Smyth’s to go engagement ring shopping. Since then we’ve been working with this amazing engagement ring specialist to pick out our engagement rings, and it has been such a joy. He has made this process so enjoyable, and Melissa and I have had so much fun picking out our rings together.
It did take us a couple times to really decide on the rings, because both of us would be a little scared to pull the trigger on the final pick. Either we would change our minds slightly about what we wanted, or were just afraid the one we had chosen wasn’t The One. But in the end, we were both glad we took our time to really make sure the rings we ended up with were the perfect rings. Both of us absolutely adore our rings, and are so glad we didn’t jump the gun and pull the trigger on some of the previous options we had considered.
Ok anyways, without furhter ado (or babbling from me) here are our engagement rings:
My ring is a round cut diamond center stone in a square halo setting with additional pave diamond going halfway down the band on either side (say that five times fast). I just can’t even with this ring. I am so unbelievably in love with it, and what it means, and everything about it. I literally had a hard time not staring at it all day long for the first few days, and I still get sad when I have to take it off to go to bed at night.
Funny story about my ring though. I think like 2 days after I had gotten it, I looked down and one of the diamonds in the halo had fallen out! I actually would have been more upset, if the same thing hadn’t already happened to me a few years ago with my promise ring! That first time I had absolutely freaked out, because I had no idea jewelers will just replace ‘supporting’ diamonds like that for no cost.
So yea, both times I have gotten a diamond ring, I’ve lost one of the diamonds within a couple days of receiving it. I guess that’s just something that happens with me and diamond rings lol? We got the diamond replaced no problem that very same day, but I was still like “omg, again?!” #diamondemergency
Melissa’s ring is a beautiful infinity band with pave black diamonds going around the entire ring. Since Melissa definitely isn’t a traditional engagement ring or girly girl, this ring is absolutely perfect for her. It’s still a nice, subtle amount of bling, and I was still able to buy her a diamond ring, but it is way more her style than something like my ring.
I absolutely love both of our rings, and I love the memories we made picking them out together. Getting engaged is such a huge step in a relationship, and I love that we were able to prepare for and really take that step together.
Ok, so time to talk about the wedding :D. Melissa and I have decided to not start official planning until January. Since Melissa is still in school (and graduating this December… yay!) this will allow her to focus on classes and finals and graduation partying and such. Also, holidays. So yea, we won’t start making any big decisions until the new year.
That being said, let’s get real here. I’m a girl who just got engaged, and has access to Pinterest. The ‘planning’ has already begun ;). It’s definitely not a ‘no wedding talk’ zone over here. The Pinterest board for ideas has been started, bridal magazines have been purchased, hypotheticals and daydreams have been discussed. This is our no pressure, purely fun wedding planning time. And I am loving it!
I also wanted to show you guys how I marked our engagement in my planner. Because, you know, it’s not real until it’s written in the planner! I made myself some custom stickers to indicate the big announcement, and decorated with a couple hearts.
And here’s how that whole side of the week turned out:
And that’s pretty much how it all happened! I’ll definitely be sharing more about the wedding and planning as things start to really happen. I am planning on creating our wedding website attached to labelmemerrit.com, since that just makes sense because I already own the hosting. So you guys will be able to follow along with that as well. Let me know if there are any specific wedding posts or videos you’d like to see, and I can get those made for you as well!
If you’ve made it to the end of this post, you’re pretty much my hero. I was definitely not planning on it being this long haha! But I hope you enjoyed all the details and story behind my engagement. You all have been so excited since I first announced my engagement on Instagram, and I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart! Your congratulations truly mean the world to me, and I love you all so much! I can’t wait to share the rest of this journey with you 🙂
