Hi everyone! Today I have a really cool tutorial to share with you all that I have gotten a lot of requests to do. If you like following along with my Project Life layouts, then you know I love including videos from my everyday into my weekly layouts. I am so excited to show you how I do that in today’s tutorial! It really is a super simple technique, but it adds so much to your layouts, making it possible to include memories that otherwise would stay on your computer, buried and forgotten.
Step 1: Upload Your Video to YouTube
First thing you’ll need to do is upload your video to YouTube, or another video hosting site. This puts your video online, making it accessible from anywhere. You will need to make sure your video is set to public to get the most out of this tutorial, and make your video viewable by anyone looking at your Project Life album. For the sake of this tutorial you don’t need to fill out any of the information of YouTube. I usually just add a short descriptive title and call it a day.
Alternately, you could keep your video set to private. However, only people with your YouTube login information will ever be able to view your video.
Step 2: Make a QR Code for Your Video
Now it’s time to turn your video into a QR code. This code is what you will be including in your Project Life layout, and will be how you are able to play your videos right from that layout.
If you’ve never heard of QR codes before, and have no idea what they are or how they work, don’t worry about it. Simply put they are those funky looking black and white squares, and when scanned (usually using an app and your phone’s camera) they will take the viewer to a pre-set link. In this case, the link is your YouTube video.
There are many sites that will turn your video into a QR code, but the one I have been using is qrstuff.com. Simple plug your YouTube video’s URL into the appropriate box, and download your QR code. Super fast and easy! There are other more advanced options (like changing the color of your code) but I never bother with any of that stuff.
Step 3: Format Your QR Code
After you make your QR code, it will download as a JPEG. Here is where we start formatting your code to fit into your Project Life spread. I usually insert my QR code into a Word document, to have an easy place to adjust the size of my code. To change the code’s size, select ‘format’ with your code selected, and you type in your desired height or width (making sure to maintain the aspect ratio).
To get your image centered on the page (which will make things easier if you plan to print your code directly onto a Project Life card) simply insert a blank text box, then paste the image into the text box. You can then move your text box (with your image) anywhere on the page. To make sure the text box does not print, set the outline color to ‘none’.
If you want to get a little more advanced, or if you have multiple video QR codes you’d like to include, you can make your codes into a collage before importing them to Word. My favorite site for making free collages is fotor.com
Step 4: Print and Add to Layout
Here’s the fun part! Print out the Word document you created in the previous step. Cut out your code and add it into your Project Life layout, however you’d like. Embellish the code so it fits right into your layouts! There are so many fun way to spruce up the code and make it blend into your layout, just have fun with this step!
Follow this tutorial if you’d like to print your code directly onto your Project Life card (or a shipping tag/label/embellishment etc.).
Step 5: Scan and Enjoy Your Video!
You have successfully added a video into your Project Life layout! Yay! Now in order to watch your video, you will need a QR scanner. The app I have on my phone is called QR Reader for iPhone. The app uses your phone’s camera to read the code. Simple point your camera at your code (you don’t even have to take your card out of the pocket protector!), lining up the code with the marks on your screen, and the app does the rest! Your YouTube link will open, and you can watch your video!
How cool is that? Including my videos is one of my favorite things with my Project Life layouts. Everyday videos are just as important to record and remember (I may even argue more so) as the picture you include. I hope you liked this tutorial, and I hope it helps you include even more wonderful memories in your Project Life layouts, in the form of videos :).
