Hello everyone! I can’t believe Christmas is a little over two weeks away! This is the time where I start panicking, because despite all my planning and preparation, Christmas has still snuck up on me! I feel like I haven’t gotten anything done, and I am just not ready! No gifts are bought, decorations weren’t up, and we still need a tree. So I decided to start checking things off my Holiday Organization to-do list, and got some holiday decorations up around here this past weekend!
Since Melissa and I are only 24, we don’t have much in the way of Christmas Decor. In the past, each year we have a tree, and we have a set of ornaments, but that’s pretty much it. This year we decided it was time to step things up, and really decorate for the holidays. But because Christmas decorations really only get displayed for a couple weeks each year, we really didn’t want to spend too much money on them. So we decided to buy a few small things and works with what we already have for the rest.
We started by clearing off and styling the sofa table. Nine months after moving in, and Christmas is finally what gave us the push to get this thing looking pretty (you can see what it’s looked like for the last nine months here). Now if you’ll kindly ignore the decor items that used to take up the sofa table surface, now being stuffed and stored within the sofa table cubbies. Shhh.
As for the Christmas decor that is now displayed, most of it is stuff we already had around the home. The blue and silver ornaments were the only purchase we made for this arrangement. We got this box of 50 ornaments for $15 from Target, which I think is a fabulous deal. They are also plastic, so there’s no risk of shattering, so we can use these as decor around the holidays for years to come.
For this sofa table set up, we simply filled three clear jars (from Crate and Barrel) with the ornaments, making sure to mix up the colors and the finishes of the ornaments. We spaced the three jars out over the table surface, and set some silver candles in between each jar. The set of three votive holders on the right were also bought from Target (previous Threshold collection), and the single silver candle on the left was a gift from Melissa’s mother.
Next on the list was adding a little Christmas cheer to the actual living area of the living room. While out Christmas shopping last weekend, we stumbled upon this stunning silver glitter banner from Pottery Barn. We loved it, but the $40 price tag really didn’t speak to us, especially for something we could easily DIY ourselves.
So that is exactly what we planned to do. That is, until we found this $10 gold Threshold version at Target! Since that’d be about the amount we would have spent on materials to DIY it, we decided to save ourselves the time and just buy the Threshold banner. We decided to fill up the huge blank wall above the TV with the Happy Holidays banner, and I just love it there! It’s so happy and really makes the room so much cheerier :).
The final couple touches we added in around the apartment were a few miniature trees that were impulse buys at Trader Joe’s. Yes we go to the store for blueberries and come out with two trees… don’t you? Anyways, one of these little guys (the ‘glitter pine’) ended up on the bookcase next to the TV. We placed the pot inside the red wood box, then surrounded the pot with some white tissue paper. We finished things off by tying a Christmasy bow around the box, and hanging mini ornaments (found at the Target Dollar Spot last year) on the mini tree.
The other tree ended up on the dining room table. This one was sprayed with sort sort of cotton spray or something, which gives it that fresh snow look. We also picked up this gold chevron table runner while we were at Target. We figured it could be Christmasy while it’s still this time of year, but could totally just be a normal table runner as well once the holiday season passes. Since we had already been looking for ages for something to cover up that horrible stained red wood of the table, we decided to go for it and bought the table runner. And now I’m already thinking of picking up a plain white table clothe to go under the runner!
And that finishes up all our little holiday sprucing tour! We decided to keep most of our decorations on the first floor, since we’re still trying to build up our stash. We will also obviously be adding a tree once it gets a little closer to the big day. We were thinking of moving the bookcase to the right of the TV stand, then sticking the tree where the bookcase currently is. We’ll see where we end up though!
What do you guys think? I think our little apartment is definitely looking and feeling a little more homey with some decorations and holiday paraphernalia put up. Have you started decorating for the holidays? Anyone else feeling behind and not prepared for Christmas to be here in 2 weeks? How do you handle staying on top of your holiday organization?
